Telegram to MT5 Receiver: What It Does and What You Need

Last updated 13 Oct 20266 min readBy the MT5 Telegram Copier team

A Telegram to MT5 receiver is the part of a signal copier that reads messages from a Telegram channel and hands them to MetaTrader 5, where a second part, usually an Expert Advisor, turns them into orders. In most desktop copiers the receiver is a Windows program logged in to your Telegram account, and it only works while that program and your MT5 terminal are both running.

Some products call the whole thing a receiver, others split it into "receiver" and "executor" or "app" and "EA". The idea is the same. Here is how the pieces fit, what free receivers can and can't do, and what a working setup asks of you.

What a Telegram receiver does

Strip a copier down and it has three jobs:

  1. Receive. Get every new message from the channels you picked, as soon as Telegram delivers it.
  2. Parse. Read the text and pull out the symbol, direction, entry, stop-loss and take-profits.
  3. Execute. Size the lot and send the order to your broker, then follow later messages like "close half".

The receiver does the first job, and often the second. Take a typical gold signal:

XAUUSD BUY 2385-2380 SL 2374 TP 2390 TP 2400

The receiver gets that text from Telegram. Either it parses it and passes a ready instruction ("buy XAUUSD, zone 2380-2385, SL 2374, TP 2390 and 2400") to the EA, or it passes the raw text and the EA parses it. Then the EA places the trade in the terminal.

How a receiver gets Telegram messages

There are two ways in, and they decide which channels you can copy.

Method How it logs in What it can read
Bot API receiver A bot token from BotFather Only chats the bot has been added to; in a channel, only if the admin makes it an administrator
User-account receiver Your phone number and the login code Telegram sends you Every channel and group your account has joined, public or private

The bot route is simple and fine for your own channel. For a paid VIP channel run by someone else, it fails, because no admin will add your bot. That is why almost every receiver built for copying other people's signals logs in as your user account, the same way Telegram Desktop does. The session then shows up in Telegram under Settings, Devices. Our page on private Telegram channels goes deeper into what the channel owner can and can't see.

The receiver + EA architecture

In a desktop copier, the receiver and the EA live on the same Windows machine and talk locally. Common ways to pass messages across:

  • A shared file. The receiver writes each signal to a file in the MT5 data folder and the EA checks that folder every second or so.
  • A local network connection on the same computer.
  • A small local web server that the EA polls.

It works, but every link is a point of failure:

  • The receiver must stay logged in to Telegram.
  • The MT5 terminal must stay open, connected, with Algo Trading switched on and the EA on a chart.
  • The computer must stay awake, online and free of surprise Windows restarts.

If any one of them stops at 3am, the signal posted at 3am is missed. When things come back, a poor receiver may then push the old message through and the EA opens it at the current price, well away from the entry. Look for a "max signal age" setting that drops stale messages. Ours defaults to 60 seconds.

Because of this, people running a receiver and EA usually move both onto a Windows VPS. The VPS guide covers what that involves and costs.

Free Telegram to MT5 receivers and their limits

"Receiver free" is a common search, and there are free options. They tend to fall into a few groups:

  • Free receiver, paid EA. The receiver download costs nothing but only works with the seller's paid EA or licence.
  • Free trial. Full product for a few days, then a subscription.
  • Open-source scripts. Python code using Telethon or Pyrogram as the receiver and the MetaTrader5 Python package as the executor. Free, and you maintain it yourself. Our GitHub copier guide goes through what breaks.
  • Bot-only receivers. Free because they're simple, and limited to channels where you control the bot.

The limits show up in the same places every time:

Limit What it means in practice
Parsing Reads the first signal but misses "TP 2400 hit, move SL to entry" or an edited stop
Multi-TP Opens one trade at TP1 and ignores the rest
Lot sizing Fixed lot only, no % risk, no max-lot cap
Uptime Depends on your machine staying on
Updates Telegram or MT5 changes, nobody fixes the free tool

A free receiver is a reasonable way to learn how copying works on a demo account. Before using one on live money, check that it handles the follow-up messages your channel actually sends. The free copier guide compares the free routes in more detail.

Telegram to MT4 receivers

The design is identical on MT4: a receiver reads Telegram and an MT4 Expert Advisor places the trades. Many desktop receivers ship both an MT4 and an MT5 version of the EA.

We only support MT5, so if your broker or prop firm gives you an MT4 account, you need a different product. If you can choose, our MT4 vs MT5 comparison explains why most newer copiers focus on MT5.

Receiver vs cloud copier

A cloud copier does all three jobs on the vendor's servers, so there is no receiver for you to run. MT5 Telegram Copier works this way:

  • Receive: you connect your Telegram account in the browser with your phone number, the login code and your two-step password if you use one. The session runs on our servers, stored encrypted, and reads new messages in the channels you switched on.
  • Parse: a rule-based parser reads the signal, plus replies, edits and phrases you add as custom words.
  • Execute: your MT5 account is connected through MetaApi, a cloud MetaTrader service, using your login, master password and server. We don't store the password.
Receiver + EA Cloud copier
Software on your side Receiver app, EA, MT5 terminal None, just a browser
Machine that must stay on Your PC or a Windows VPS None of yours
Works from a Mac or phone Through a Windows VPS Yes
Telegram session stored On your machine On the vendor's server
Broker password Stays in your terminal Goes to the vendor's MetaApi-type service

The honest trade-off: with a receiver, everything stays on hardware you control. With a cloud copier, you hand a third party the connection, and in return there is nothing to babysit. Our plan is EUR 24.99 a month for one Telegram account, one channel and one MT5 account, and EUR 24.99 a month for each extra channel plus MT5 account.

What setup looks like

For a receiver and EA, expect roughly this: install the receiver on Windows, log in to Telegram inside it, pick channels, install the EA in MT5, switch on Algo Trading, allow any URLs the seller lists under Tools, Options, Expert Advisors, attach the EA to a chart, set the symbol suffix and lot inputs, then keep it all running.

For our cloud copier, the setup guide has the full steps: log in with your Whop email, connect Telegram, switch on the channel, add your MT5 account, set your risk. Then paste a real message into "test a message" to see what would be traded.

Either way, run it on a demo account for at least a week before going live. A receiver passes on bad signals as quickly as good ones, and leveraged trading can lose you money.

Telegram to MT5 receiver FAQ

Is a Telegram receiver the same as a copier?

It is one part of a copier. The receiver reads Telegram, and the EA or cloud service places the trades. Some products sell the two separately.

Can a free receiver read a private VIP channel?

Only if it logs in as your Telegram user account. A receiver that uses a bot token can't read a channel unless the admin adds the bot.

Does the receiver have to run all the time?

Yes. A desktop receiver only gets messages while it is running and logged in, and the EA only trades while MT5 is open. That's why most users put both on a VPS.

Is there a Telegram to MT4 receiver?

Yes, many desktop receivers include an MT4 EA. MT5 Telegram Copier supports MT5 only.

Do I need a receiver with MT5 Telegram Copier?

No. Reading Telegram and placing trades both happen on our servers. You set it up in the browser and nothing is installed.
